There have been many advances in MIDI for guitar over the last decade. There is a decent amount of stomp boxes, floor and rack processors, and etc. to show that guitar players still want more audio possibilities from their guitar. Back then the tech was so limited that often players experienced the same headaches as keyboard players did. It was mostly a give and take type of issue. Units with proprietary hardware and software combinations often did not communicate guitar nuances well with external gear for synthesizers. Certain patches did not respond well to certain types of playing styles. Fishman created a product setup designed to work within itself AND with external instruments.
Introducing the Fishman Tripleplay Wireless MIDI Guitar Controller. This versatile system connects seamlessly with you computer and combines hardware and software in a unique way. TriplePlay is a composing, performing and recording system that puts a plethora of instruments and sounds at your fingertips with the mobility of wireless control. Switch between instruments, or play up to four instruments at the same time. Compose music with unlimited tonal options. Share arrangements with your band. Teach or learn faster with accurate notation. Create video soundtracks. Mix your own samples, beats, loops and tracks. The possibilities are practically endless. And all of it being done using an electric guitar!
The system is a pickup and control unit with mounting hardware for most guitars; a wireless transmitter; and receiver; and a decent library of music software and virtual instruments, which work with TriplePlay’s own software. There are many mounts to fit many kinds and shapes of guitars. Not all, but many. The pickup has an adhesive mount that does not permanently attach to the guitar should you decide to remove it for whatever reason.
Its use is really simple
The controller’s durable, low profile design fits neatly behind your guitar’s bridge. The unit is wireless over 100 ft, so no heavy 13-pin cables to trip over. The rechargeable Lithium Ion battery has over 20 hours of life providing plenty of power for a full day of playing. Accessible on-board menu navigation buttons, volume control, and the guitar/mix/synth switch make it easy to change settings or instruments during performances.
Getting started and learning to translate your playing
Professionals and beginners alike start playing quickly with minimal tweaking. Its accurate tracking helps keep guitar playing as natural as possible with its own software and with external units such as synthesizer racks. Tracking problems are often difficulties with speed, accuracy, and sometimes, pitch. Speed should not be an issue with TriplePlay, and most often, that complaint arises from a misunderstanding of the way synthesizers work.
Some sounds will play loud immediately and fade into silence. Others take time to reach the maximum volume and sustain for as long as the player can of the actual instrument such as a horn or saxophone. With that said, one has to control picking technique depending on the instrument patch and the expression of that particular instrument. (Pitch bends on a piano patch?)
Tracking accuracy is relatively simple as changing the strings. Literally. New sets of strings will alter the output and you might need to readjust some settings. The software’s tuner does exactly what its supposed to do…get you in tune. The less the device has to figure what is being played, the fewer problems you deal with tracking accuracy. You might need to check the sensitivity for output concerns.
Unlimited sound library
The system comes with full versions of software so even if you have some virtual instruments available, this bundle gives you thousands more. With the easy and seriously fast encoding, preset editor and mixing console, you’ll be mixing your own music in no time. The bundle includes:
Native Instruments – KOMPLETE Elements and GuitarRig LE
Notion Music – PROGRESSION 2
IK Multimedia – SampleTank 2 XT and AmpliTube Custom Shop
PreSonus – Studio One Artist TriplePlay Edition
Available for Windows 7 or later , OS X 10.6.0 or later.
For the sake of time I could only show so many screen shots of the software in action. But this is just a taste of creativity available in a system like this.
Once the initial installation is complete, you are good to go. It however does take some time for the download to complete. The software must be downloaded off their website, so no user disc is included. You use the provided serial number in the packaging and the serial number of the unit to get things up and running for download. Other than that, I could care less about a long download time once I knew the software and hardware were connected.
There is so much you can do with this system that I am completely overwhelmed. The phrase “endless possibilities” is a fact with this setup. You can use the setup with other DAW for continued recording possibilities. The list goes on and on. You are only limited by your own creativity. Be sure to check Ant Hill Music if you are looking to purchase this bundle.
